International Ecoperformance Festival: Rhode Island Edition - Local Submissions

About

The International Ecoperformance Film Festival: Rhode Island Edition is an offshoot of the International Ecoperformance Film-Festival, which originated in Saō Paulo, Brazil as an artistic response to the eco-political challenges of the 21st century. The festival aims to introduce the concept of ecoperformance to the local community through three days of events. It will include the screening of 74 films from 34 countries throughout the Granoff Center, as well as a special screening of ecoperformance films responding to Rhode Island and Massachusetts environs. The RI festival will culminate in a live interdisciplinary (eco)performance featuring dancer Julie Dind with music by Inga Chinilina, scenography by Rolf Gerstlauer and community-sourced footage of the urban and natural landscapes of Rhode Island and a discussion and reception to follow.

Inga Chinilina

Inga Chinilina is a composer, improviser, and pianist based in Providence, Rhode Island. Inga’s music reflects on a range of social topics such as immigration, womanhood, and ecology. Her compositional practice spans acoustic and electroacoustic (fixed and real-time) realms with instrumentation from solo instruments to orchestra. In addition to stand-alone music pieces, Inga also makes installations, music for dance and film. Ensembles that performed Inga’s work include Jack Quartet, ICE Ensemble, and Dal Niente. Inga is a PhD candidate in “Music and Multimedia Composition” at Brown University. Her research explores how composers represent sound entities that bare emotional meaning and possess complex timbre through the use of Western-European instruments.

Julie Dind

Julie Dind is a butoh dancer, a multidisciplinary artist, and a PhD candidate in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies at Brown University. Her artistic and scholarly work autistically explores autistic modes of performance. She dedicated over a decade to the study of butoh, both in Japan and abroad. Since 2012, she collaborates with Rolf Gerstlauer on an a(u/r)tistic research-creation project titled “Drawing NN Inside Butoh.” As part of this collaboration, she has performed internationally in over 40 site-specific performances. Her work has been presented at various locations, including Sørlandsutsillingen (Norway), The Invisible Dog (New York) and Ós Textile Residency (Iceland).

Rolf Gerstlauer

Rolf Gerstlauer is a Swiss-born architect, filmmaker, multidisciplinary artist, and professor at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design. His teachings and artistic research works investigate Body & Space Morphologies in a more-than-human world. Working with performing arts including dance, choreography, live-installations, land art and earthworks, he uses mainly video and photography as the tools to explore environmental and socio-cultural conditions and phenomena. The collaboration with Julie Dind resulted in their participation in all three previous International Ecoperformance Film-Festivals, several articles and essays as well as a new teaching format on ecoperformance in architecture.

Maura Baiocchi

Maura Baiocchi is a Brazilian choreographer, director and founder of the São Paulo-based dance-theater-group Taanteatro Companhia (*1991) and the International Ecoperformance Film-Festival (*2021).“Ecoperformance”, a term coined by Baiocchi in 2009, pertains to the conceptual framework of her performing arts approach called "taanteatro" or "choreographic theater of tensions". After studies of classical and modern dance in the 1970ies, she became a Brazilian Butoh pioneer studying with Kazuo Ohno and Min Tanaka in Japan in the 1980s. Baiocchi created around 60 stage works performed in Brazil and abroad, taught at the National University of Brasilia and published eight books about her research.

Wolfgang Pannek

Wolfgang Pannek is a German-born director and producer. He is co-director of Taanteatro Companhia and coordinator of the International Ecoperformance Film-Festival. Pannek organized and edited the book Ecoperformance (2022) and curated the dossier on Ecoperformance in the Brazilian journal Art of Stage. With a Master of Arts from FernUniversität Hagen, his career spans over 30 years comprising projects in Germany, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, and Mozambik. His recent stage works include cARTAUDgraphy (2015), 1001 Plateaux (2017), Messages from Mozambique (2018), and Chissano - Rite for Mabungulane (2020). Pannek co-authored several books with Maura Baiocchi, among which Choreographic Theater of Tensions: Forces & Forms (2020).
