The Stars

Every point in space occurs once at each moment in time. THE STARS makes that literal.

In Fall 2021, the BAI welcomed multimedia artist-in-residence Andrew Schneider to campus to fabricate and install THE STARS, a new work developed in part during Schneider’s previous residency as a Professor of the Practice in Spring 2019.

Moving beyond a self-guided gallery experience, THE STARS' unseen narrator guides each individual  through their own personal  journey of the precisely programmed installation - and the cosmos of themselves. Over 1,000 individually reactive points of light and a 132-channel sound system envelop each audience member in this early prototype, immersing audiences inside 10,000 distinct stars. Drawing on inspirations as broad as seeing our own Milky Way for the first time, Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Mirror Room, and Random International's Rain Room, THE STARS invites viewers to become active experiencers - as they explore the traces of themselves in light, the universe, and those who have been here before us.

Schneider invited students, faculty, and staff to join him in fabricating over 2,000 star strands for inclusion in THE STARS installation, scheduled for December 2021 in the Granoff’s Fishman Studio.

Development of THE STARS was made possible with support from The Brown Arts Institute, The Onassis Foundation, and Eliko Industries.

THE STARS is produced with and managed by Los Angeles Performance Practice.
