Usual Suspects

Carrie Mae Weems: Varying Shades of Brown
September 18-December 3, 2023

About

In blurred and blue-tinted photographs, young Black men wearing hoodies are surrounded by a soft haze. In Usual Suspects (2021), Carrie Mae Weems presents their portraits alongside redacted police reports, but her refusal to show their full faces subverts the criminal index of the mugshot. Instead, the artist offers each subject a graceful, if ghostly, portrayal, underscoring the dehumanizing and deadly impacts of racial profiling. In a grid of nine text panels, Weems mimics the language of a police report: each text states a unique name, date, location, and set of physical details of an individual, but with identical narratives of police violence. The repetitive language and imagery of these works underscore the cyclical nature of anti-Black violence and police brutality in the United States and question the possibility of true justice within a system built on structural inequality.
