Looking Back to Move Forward

The portraits in Sayles Hall are iconic, but have you ever stopped to think about who these individuals are, their impact on Brown University, and why they are featured in such a prominent space?

Recognizing the portraits in Sayles Hall reflect a slowly evolving diversity, The Community Label Project aims to address these issues in a meaningful way.

This fall, all members of the Brown community are invited to submit an object label reflecting on a portrait of your choosing (up to 125 words) to the Community Label Project using the online submission form. Labels will be featured in a public online gallery, allowing the portraits to be recontextualized in the current moment. This is a unique opportunity to freely interpret the paintings of Brown dignities and lend your voice and fresh perspective to the space. You are welcome to research and interpret selected Brown University figures and explore untold narratives. Consider including your voice to this important process in diversification!

Questions? Join Nicole Wholean, University Curator for an informative zoom meeting on October 8 at 12:00pm. Registration required. Can't make the meeting? Email Nicole_Wholean@brown.edu

Submissions are due October 30, 2020

Labels will be featured in an online gallery opening November 8, 2020
Submissions will highlight participants' names and affiliations and all participants are expected to adhere to Brown’s code of conduct.
