Nobly situated on the quiet green of the Front Campus near Manning Chapel, Arthur Carter’s Untitled is a group of stainless steel curves that loop around one another to create a spherical sculpture that appears both grounded and weightless. Without being imposing, it brings a unique energy to the quiet and contemplative space where students and community members alike seek a moment of relaxation from everyday life. Carter’s work seems appropriately situated among natural elements like the trees of the quiet green, or the tall grass of a hillside in Connecticut where he lives. Yet his sculptures are quite versatile and fit well with the urban landscapes of New York City where they are also frequently sited.

Carter, a Brown University graduate, is a man of many talents. His sculptures often reflect his interest in math, graphic design, and art history. He creates beauty through elegant minimalism. In addition to his artistic accomplishments, he was a successful businessman, and founded The New York Observer.

Arthur Carter has been a featured solo artist in many galleries, including the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, TN; and New York University’s Grey Art Gallery; and the New Britain Museum of American Art in New Britain, CT. In 2009, Harry N. Abrams published a comprehensive collection of his work, Arthur Carter: Sculptures, Paintings, and Drawings and a book of drawn studies for sculpture, Arthur Carter: Studies for Construction.
