Collaborative Residency: Brown Arts Institute x Nuyorican Poets Cafe Spoken Word Festival

In honor of the 50th anniversary of the famed Nuyorican Poets Cafe in New York City, Brown Arts Institute has invited Caridad De La Luz, a world renowned spoken word artist known as La Bruja, to collaborate over the next year to curate a Spoken Word Festival featuring students, local poets, and notable spoken word artists from around the country and beyond.

About the Artist

Caridad De La Luz HeadshotCaridad (La Bruja) De La Luz won an Emmy in 2022 after becoming the Executive Director of the NUYORICAN POETS CAFE where she began her career in 1996. Winner of the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship and David Prize finalist, Caridad balances a career of activism, education and entertainment. She has been one of America’s leading spoken word poets for over 20 years and has received The Edgar Allan Poe Award from The Bronx Historical Society. She was honored as a Bronx Living Legend by The Bronx Music Heritage Center and was named “Top 20 Puerto Rican Women Everyone Should Know”.
