Brown Arts Institute (BAI) is excited to announce that Theresa Ganz, Professor of Visual Arts at Brown University, has been appointed Associate Director of the Institute. Ganz is a practicing visual artist who has long been involved with the Institute, serving on the faculty committees that steered BAI from the Creative Arts Council, to the Brown Arts Initiative, to an Institute five years ago. Her duties will consist of inter-departmental liaison work, connecting BAI staff and programs to arts faculty across departments at Brown, and strategic curatorial guidance, principally in support of the BAI’s exhibitions team. 

"Theresa has been part of this Institute's story since before it was an institute," said BAI Director Sydney Skybetter. “She sat on the faculty committees that carried us from council to initiative to institute, she's a formidable artist in her own practice, and she brings a curatorial intelligence and a set of relationships across the visual arts and the RISD Museum that we've wanted here for a long time. The next few years will decide what curatorial training at Brown actually looks like, and whether The Lindemann, the Bell Gallery, and the RISD Museum can work as one system for our students. Theresa is the person I want helping us answer that."

As an artist, Ganz works in photo-based collage, installation and video. Her work has shown nationally and internationally at Smack Mellon, The RISD Museum, The Datz Museum of Art in Korea, the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, Evans Contemporary in Canada, The Bell Gallery at Brown University, San Francisco CameraWork and The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin. Her book Shape Shifting was published by the Penumbra Foundation, in Summer 2019 and her monograph, Grand Illusion, was published by Mousse Publishing in the Fall of 2023.

About Theresa Ganz
Theresa Ganz was born in New York City.  She earned her BA from Vassar College in Film and her MFA from San Francisco Art Institute in Photography. She works in photo-based collage, installation and video. Her work has shown nationally and internationally at Smack Mellon, The RISD Museum, The Datz Museum of Art in Korea, the Museum of Craft and Design in San Francisco, Evans Contemporary in Canada, The Bell Gallery at Brown University, San Francisco CameraWork and The John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin. Her work was included in the 2016 DeCordova Biennial. Her work has also been featured and reviewed in publications including ArtForum, Mousse Magazine, Outpost Journal, Lenscratch and Magazine Gitz. She was the 2015 winner of the ArtSlant Prize. Her work is in the collections of Providence College, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the RISD Museum and the New York Public Library. She was a founding member and director at Regina Rex in New York. She currently resides in Providence, RI where she is a Professor of Visual Art at Brown University.
