The Brown Arts Initiative Student Grants Program provides funding to Brown students in support of projects that involve the production, study and/or critique of the creative arts.
Any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing may apply for BAI student funding. Students who have received past funding for a project may not apply for additional funding for the same project. For example, an undergraduate making a feature length film may apply for support only once for the film; however, that same student may apply for funding for a different project.
Amount and Duration of Award
Grants of up to $1,000 are awarded each semester for projects that take place during the current or next semester. Retroactive awards will not be granted.
Criteria for Selection
Applications will be reviewed and evaluated by a Grants Committee comprised of arts students. Awards will be made based on the following:
- Intrinsic merit of the proposal
- Evidence of innovation and experimentation
- Integration with BAI philosophy and priorities
- Provision of a well considered and reasonable budget
- A feasible time frame for completion
Award funds may be applied to reasonable and necessary costs of the project. These expenses may include: materials, artists fees, production costs, marketing expenses and other fees that directly support the project. BAI Student Grant funds may not be used to support student travel, accommodations or stipends. Any expenses incurred must adhere to Brown’s contract labor, purchasing and travel guidelines.
Timeline and Procedure for Submitting Proposals
A call for proposals is issued on the first Monday of the each semester. Any applicant proposing a project which could have implications for his/her home department (i.e. bringing in a visiting artist) must discuss plans with the department manager before submitting an application. Please allow adequate time for this initial step. Please note: Proposals are submitted electronically via UFunds. Application requirements include:
- A description of the project
- A project budget (submitted using the provided budget template)
- A proposed timeline
Application Deadline and Award Notification
The BAI accepts Student Grant applications as follows: For the fall 2019 semester, the application period opens Sept 9, 2019 and closes on Oct 2, 2019 at 11:59 pm. For the spring 2020 semester, the application period opens Jan 27, 2020 and closes on Feb 19, 2020 at 11:59 pm. Please note that applications submitted after the deadline will not be accepted by the UFunds online grants system.
Grant recipients must complete the required final report form before the end of the semester in which funds were awarded (by December 15 for Fall awards, or by May 15 for Spring awards). Grant recipients are asked to describe the work accomplished and reflect on both successful outcomes and challenges. Final reports must include photo, video or other documentation for BAI promotional purposes and inclusion in the BAI archive. Provided images must conform to Brown’s Image Use Policy. In addition, Student Grant recipients may be invited to exhibit their work in the annual Spring Arts Festival Student Exhibition in the Granoff Center Atrium Gallery.
