Deputy Provost and Interim Chair, Music
Joseph Meisel is deputy provost and adjunct associate professor of history. During 2017-18, he is serving as interim chair of the Department of Music. He is also administrative director of the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation, an independent philanthropy that awards fellowships in the creative arts and critical and historical studies. A historian of 19th- and 20th-century Britain, much of his scholarship has examined performative dimensions of politics and public life. As deputy provost since 2010, he has been closely involved with many aspects of the arts at Brown. Previously, during his tenure as program officer for research universities and humanistic scholarship at the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, his portfolio included grants to advance scholarship in a range of arts fields. Meisel received his AB and PhD degrees in history from Columbia University, and is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society. He has been a guitarist and songwriter since high school and currently performs with the Brown band Dirty Filthy Basement.
